Every trip like this starts with a morning of standing around. Bags get weighed, jerry cans get filled, someone counts the coolers twice. The garden was the one part of the lodge doing anything, so that is where the camera went.
The red hot poker was the loudest thing in it, a stack of orange and yellow against the green, with the bamboo behind holding still enough to be worth a frame. The last shot is just leaves, backlit, the kind of thing you take while you wait for the word to load up.
None of this is what you fly to Tanzania for. But the light before a long drive is honest light, and it felt right to spend a few frames on it before the north road took over.
The poker and the bamboo are on the 55 at ISO 200, still in the sun. The leaves are the 135 pushed to ISO 1600 in the shade of the bed. This was the lodge garden near Arusha, the last still morning before the roads got rough.
