The market was the last stop before we left town, and the busiest thing I photographed all day. The trick in a place like this is to stop trying to take the whole market and just take one person at a time.

The woman in the orange headscarf was the frame I kept. She was working through a tray, head down, and for a moment the stalls behind her fell out of focus and left her alone in the middle of all of it. After that, a man under the Pepsi sign, a younger one in an Emirates shirt lost in his own thoughts, and the bean sacks, which are their own kind of portrait.

Colour does a lot of the work here, so I mostly stayed out of its way. You do not need to add anything to a wall of dried beans in ten shades.

All on the 55, ISO wherever each stall left it: 200 on the woman in the open, 1600 under the man's awning, down to 64 on the beans in full sun. This was the market at Arusha, the last stop before we left town.
