Late April in the valley and everything was catching up at once: ewes with lambs already on their feet, the first cherry blossom out, and grass so green after the wet that it almost looked lit from underneath. Spring gets to the fells a few weeks after it reaches the towns, and you feel the difference.

The blossom frame is the one I nearly walked past. A single branch hanging into the shot, a ewe settled in the field beyond, the fells behind gone soft under cloud. It puts the season and the place in one frame without trying too hard.

The lone lamb held still for exactly one exposure before deciding I was too close, which is the usual bargain.
