Checked into the ryokan with the light already going. The room does the quiet thing these rooms do: tatami, shoji, a low table, one paper lamp throwing warm light, and then the round window in the back wall cut straight onto a single pine. Inside it was all amber; outside the little garden had already gone blue.

The round window is the whole composition, the rest of the room arranged to lead you to it. I set up at the wooden table by the door, shoes off, and shot down the length of the room toward the glass.

Handheld at ISO 12800, since the only light was the lamp and the last of the dusk. Grain, but the warmth held. The ryokan was Mimari, five minutes from the station and a great deal quieter than that suggests: its own small Japanese garden, a private onsen, and this round window. A good place to start a couple of days.
