The climb up to Kiyomizu pays you in views, and this time it paid early: a rainbow came down over the Higashiyama rooftops while I was still on the lane below, the pottery shops and tea houses stacked down the slope toward it. A few minutes either way and I would have missed it.
At the top the temple does what it does. The second frame is the city seen through the thick vermilion pillars, the whole of Kyoto handed to you in a painted frame, the stone floor lit warm. The third is the pagoda, vermilion against blue, with the crowd it always carries packed in underneath. I left them in. Pretending Kiyomizu is empty would be a lie, and the crowd is part of the late-afternoon light here.
Base ISO throughout, the 55 doing the framing. The rainbow was the gift; the rest I would have got anyway.
