First morning in Kyoto, in on foot along the Kamo River. The machiya sit right at the water on the near bank, the path runs the far side, and the hills close the end of it. Mid-November, overcast, the city quiet enough that the few people on the path read as punctuation rather than crowd.
Then up into Gion, where the wooden fronts get taller and darker and a red teahouse wall breaks the brown. The light had started to come through the cloud. I was lining up the street when the man in the blue jacket rode into it, the one bright moving thing in a lane where everyone else was strolling, and that became the frame.
Both on the 55 at base ISO in flat morning light. Nothing technical to it, just walking Hanamikoji and waiting for the street to arrange itself.
