We had stopped somewhere on the long road north when he agreed to a frame. No arranging, no props, just a man in a red robe and a stack of beadwork, looking back at the lens while the savannah ran out behind him.
I took the same moment twice. In colour the red robe and the white beads carry it, warm against the dry gold of the plain. In black and white the beads become texture and the whole picture falls to his face and the set of his eyes.
Both are the 55 at base ISO 64, the light clean enough that nothing needed pushing. It felt like the right way to start the Maasai part of the trip: one steady portrait before the country opened up toward Lake Natron.
