We came back to the Maasai in the morning, when the light was still coming in low and sideways. The first woman laughed at something just off camera, and that was the frame, the whole face going at once, the polite portrait forgotten.
The two women after her were the steadier picture: standing close, beadwork stacked at the neck, the volcano sitting hazy in the distance behind them. Each is here in both colour and black and white, because the beadwork is a colour story and the faces are a black and white one and I did not want to choose.
The laughing frames are the 55 at f/11 shot straight into the low sun, pushed to ISO 6400 to keep the shutter high. The pair are base ISO 64 once the light had lifted a little. The cone behind is Ol Doinyo Lengai [confirm].
