You come to Lake Natron for the flamingos and end up photographing the floor. The soda and minerals leave the ground in colours that do not look like ground: rust orange, chalk white, cracked into patterns that change every few steps.

The footprint was the one that stopped me, a single deep press in the wet mud with the ridges holding light. Everything out here leaves a mark and the lake keeps it for a while. Then the wide frames, the flats running flat and bright to the hills, which is the scale the close-ups leave out.

The two orange close-ups are the 135 pushed to ISO 1600 and 3200 to stay sharp handheld at f/19; the flats are the 55 back at base ISO. All of it Lake Natron, looking down instead of out.
