You are up before the light out here whether you like it or not, and on this morning it paid off. The volcano came first, a black cut-out against a sky going orange, the plain underneath still holding the night.
Then the whole thing opened. The frame I kept has the truck in it and one of us standing beside it, both reduced to silhouettes, because a dawn this size needs something human in front of it to mean anything. After that just the sky, pink and grey in bands over the dark ground.
All on the 55 at ISO 1600, easing back to 800 as the light climbed. The cone is Ol Doinyo Lengai [confirm]; the figure is one of ours, out early to watch it come up.
