Up on the rim of Ngorongoro before the descent, in the cold half-light that comes before the crater does anything. The first frame is just the treeline against the sky, the ground still holding the night underneath it.

Then the aloes started moving. Lovebirds, a scatter of bright green among the orange flower spikes, waking up and feeding before the day got going. Small, fast, and exactly the wrong light for them, which is the usual arrangement with the good birds.

The treeline is the 55 at ISO 1600; the lovebirds are the 135 pushed to 3200 and then 12800 in the gloom before the sun cleared the rim. High-forest edge of Ngorongoro, the last cold minutes before the road drops into the crater.
