We stopped at a shop near the crater on the way out, the kind that sells to everyone passing through. Among the usual carvings were these: masks covered end to end in beadwork, whole faces built up in wire and thousands of tiny beads over the wood underneath.

It is patient work, and it photographs like it, the colour dense enough that the light barely needs to do anything. The trouble was there was barely any light to work with. The shop was dark and the masks were on a back wall in it.

Both on the 55, stopped to f/22 and dragged to ISO 12800 at a twentieth of a second, braced against a shelf. The grain in the shadows is the cost of shooting in there; the beadwork was worth paying it.
