The approach does the same trick as the gardens back in Tokyo: old thing, new things, no attempt to hide the seam. The first frame is the moat, a sloping stone rampart on the right that has stood for centuries, the Business Park towers on the left that went up in the eighties, the two reflected together in the water with the ginkgos already turned yellow.

Then the keep. It is a 1930s reconstruction in concrete rather than the original, and it does not matter much from here: white walls, green roofs, gold trim, all of it catching the low afternoon sun. The crowd at its feet is the point of the second frame as much as the building, the scale of the thing read off the people.
