The chapel is the part of the palace that stops you. Two storeys of it, in fact, but the upper royal chapel is the one that lands: a vault painted deep blue and dusted with gold stars, the ribs picked out in gold, dropping to a tall window of medieval glass over the altar.

What I like is how much of it is worn. The frescoes on the lower walls have faded to ghosts of red and blue, and nobody has tried to freshen them up. You get the star vault at full strength and the old paint holding on underneath, six hundred years apart in the same room.

Dark work again, ISO up near its limit to keep the glass from blowing out. I finished on the stairwell arch on the way out, one more frame within a frame, the courtyard bright at the end of it.
