We found the family already on a kill, mostly hidden in grass that came up past their shoulders. A mother and cubs old enough to feed themselves, heads down, working through it in the flat middle of the afternoon.

What stays with me is how little of that time was spent eating. She fed with her head up more than down, lifting off the carcass every minute or two to scan the sky and the grass line, because a cheetah on a kill is a cheetah about to lose it to something bigger. The sitting frame is her doing exactly that, watching for the vultures that give the lions their address.

All on the 135, ISO 100 to 800, stopped down to keep the grass from stealing the focus off the cats. The long stems make it a harder picture than a clean plains sighting, and a truer one.
