Half of what Stone Town runs on comes off the boats, and the fish market is where you feel it. Wet floors, the smell, buckets of the morning's catch set down wherever there is room, everything moving fast because none of it keeps in this heat.

The compositions were already made; I just kept out of the way. A pile of silver fish in a red bucket, the colours doing all the work. Then one big fish laid out against a wall the exact warm orange of the light, close enough to read the scales. Nothing to add to either.

Both the 55, ISO 400 to 1600 under the market roof. The kind of place you photograph quickly and gratefully, before someone picks the bucket up and the picture walks off to be somebody's lunch.
