Stone Town is a different town at nine in the morning than it is at noon. The lanes are still cool and mostly empty, and the buildings, which spend the hot hours competing with the crowds for your attention, get to just be buildings for a while.

So this is the quiet lap: someone crossing an open square in front of a colonial pile, a plant with red leaves feeding on a water-stained wall, and one facade where the plaster has come off in patches to show the coral stone underneath. The whole town is falling apart slowly, and it does it beautifully, which is most of the appeal.

All on the 55, base ISO to 400. Hardly anyone about to walk into the frame, which is exactly why the early walk is the one worth setting an alarm for.
