Every evening the young men come down to this stretch of the Stone Town seafront and use it as a gym. Running jumps, flips, handsprings off the sand, all of it timed, whether they mean it or not, for the exact hour the sun is going down behind the boats.

The trick is picking the background before the body arrives. You cannot really track them in the air, so you frame the sky and the dhows and wait for someone to launch into the space you left. Some frames are just sand; the ones that land have a whole person suspended against the sunset.

All on the 55 at ISO 1600 to keep the shutter fast enough for bodies in flight. The first frame is just the sun over the harbour, before the show started; after that it is reflexes and luck, which is most of photographing anything that jumps.
