Tarangire is good for birds in the way a place with water and trees always is, and the star of it is the lilac-breasted roller. Turquoise, lilac, a wash of rust, all of it on a bird small enough to sit on a twig, and it knows it, turning on the perch like it is being paid.

Around the roller, the working birds: a nest packed under an eave with a small tenant at the door, one caught head-on so it is all beak and eyes, a pair of starlings sorting themselves out on a wall. Not the headline, but the reason you keep the long lens up between the big animals.

All on the 135, base ISO to 200. Birds fill the flat hours, and now and then one of them is a roller and the flat hour turns out to have been the point.
