I reached Hamarikyu with maybe an hour of good light left, which turned out to be the right hour. The first frame is the approach, the canal running in toward the garden with the Shiodome towers caught gold at the end of it and laid back down into the water.

Inside, the pines do everything. They are kept low and wide, hundreds of years of pruning behind the shapes, and in this light they read almost as silhouettes against the glass towers beyond the treeline. I shot the leaning one backlit, then the big spreading one straight into the sun a minute later. Old shapes, new shapes, the same warm light on both.

All on the 55 at f/8, base ISO, letting the low sun do the modelling. The garden gives you the contrast for free: you just have to be there when the light drops.
