After ten, and the day's gardens felt a long way off. The first frame is a yakiniku joint with its whole front turned to neon, yellow tile, red kanji, a bicycle and a sandwich board and not a single customer in sight on the street. The colour was doing the talking.
Two minutes' walk and the scale dropped right down: a bar alley barely wide enough for two people, lined with tiny places stacked sign over sign, lanterns and tungsten everywhere, a few people in the middle of it deciding where to go in. This is the Tokyo I keep coming back for, the city folded down to a corridor of doors.
The yakiniku front needed ISO 12800 handheld, which the X2D will give you if you ask, grain and all; the alley sat easier at 3200 under the warmer light. No tripod, no fuss, just shot what was lit, somewhere in the back streets of Shinjuku.
